Why Do Pests Come Out During Summer?

The higher summer temperatures make it possible for bugs to accelerate their growth cycle because pest eggs, like Mosquito eggs, won’t hatch until temperatures are above 50 degrees. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and the increasing rainfall during the summer provides more standing water for pests to lay their eggs. The longer daylight hours of the summer also provide pests with more time to feed, which is why they are more active during this time of year.

Where Do Pests Go During the Fall and Winter Months?

Many pests, like mosquitoes, enter a state of dormancy known as diapause during the winter. This is a physiological state that allows them to survive the cold temperatures. During diapause, pests will find a sheltered spot, such as under leaves or in tall grass, and enter a state of reduced activity. In this state, they do not feed or reproduce, and they will remain inactive until the weather warms up again in the spring. Some pests, such as mice and rats, may also seek out warm, sheltered areas, such as buildings, to survive the winter. Others, such as cockroaches, may remain active but will slow down their activity levels in response to the colder temperatures. Learn more about how seasons specifically affect insects.
