How to Get Rid of Grubs in Your Lawn: Everything You Need to Know About Grubs

1) Eco-Friendly Natural Grub Control

a) Attract Birds to Eat Grubs

One of the best eco-friendly ways to get rid of grubs is to make your lawn an oasis for birds. Birds are a natural defense method against grubs because they eat grubs (also known as Scarab Beetles). If you have the time and resources, chickens are a wonderful eco-friendly natural solution to prevent the damage caused by grubs. Chickens love to graze in the yard and eat the tasty little white delicacies.

If you don’t want to invest in chickens, you can also attract grub-eating birds, like starlings, robins and blue jays, by outfitting your yards with birdhouses, bird feeders or birdbaths. As you attract these natural grub defending birds, you’ll see the benefits of fewer grubs and a healthier lawn. Birds are a predator of grubs and many other pests as well, making them an excellent and natural pest control for your lawn.

If you’re in Oklahoma city, we also provide eco-friendly lawn grub control service OKC loves.

B) Rake and Aerate Your Lawn

Regularly raking your leaves and aerating your lawn is another excellent eco-friendly way to combat grubs. Thatch is an organic layer between the grass and the soil surface that builds up when your leaves and lawn debris aren’t broken down fast enough. Grubs like to hide out in thick layers of thatch and leaves, so regularly raking during the fall season removes this shelter.

Aerating your lawn is also an effective grub deterrent, as perforating the soil of your lawn with small holes alleviates soil compaction and exposes grub worms. When a lawn is aerated, natural grub control methods, like milky spore disease and nematodes, can easily penetrate the soil and kill grubs.

C) Milky Spore

If you already have an infestation of grub worms, milky spore is another great way to get rid of grubs in your lawn. Milky spore is an eco-friendly, natural grub control method that works best for specific grub worms i.e. Japanese beetles. The non-toxic milky spore is easily applied to your yard with a dispenser and is found at any local home and garden store. You’ll treat your lawn with milky spore several times a year for about 3 years, but the elimination of grub worms will last for 15 years or more.

Once applied, milky spore works by spreading spores amongst the soil. Believe it or not, the more grubs you have, the faster the spores will spread. Keep in mind that the ideal soil temperature for application is 60°- 70 °F, and spores take longer to spread in colder climates and colder seasons.

Nematodes can also be used alongside milky spore to kill grubs. These little tiny worms attack garden pests, and help to control grubs. Beneficial nematodes are easy to buy at any local home and garden store, and should be applied in cooler hours of the day, when there is less sunlight. You’ll apply nematodes directly after purchasing them, and reapply the little parasitic worms 1-2 times a year for 3 years. These little worms are also very good for plant growth.

2) Chemical Grub Control Elimination

a) Carbaryl

Carbaryl (Sevin) is a fast acting chemical grub control treatment that kills all life stages of grubs in less than 14 days following application. We recommend application by professional pest control companies only, and rubber gloves are always used to apply carbaryl, which should never be sprayed indoors. Carbaryl is toxic for more than 85 insect species and bees, and children and pets should avoid the treated area of your lawn directly following application. The ideal time to apply Carbaryl is in the early fall (late-August and September), which will eliminate about 80% of all grubs.

b) Trichlorfon

Trichlorfon (Dylox) is another effective chemical grub control treatment that kills grubs in less than 3 days following application. Applied in early fall, Trichlorfon eliminates White Grubs, Sod Webworms and lawn damaging pests by contact and ingestion.  The chemical compound in Trichlorfon breaks down in 7-10 days, and though this chemical has low toxicity to people and pets, it should be allowed to dry before exposure to the sprayed area.

c) Preventative Chemicals

Imidacloprid, Thiamethoxam, and Clothianidin are the best preventative chemicals that reduce grub worm infestations, especially when applied ahead of the fall season. With early June and July application and immediate irrigation of these preventative insecticides, more than 75%  of grub worms–at all stages of life–will be killed. When combined with Carbaryl and Trichlorfon chemical insecticides in the fall months, nearly 100% of grub worms are eliminated.

What Do Grubs Turn Into?

Grubs turn into beetles that eat your grass, leaves and other plants in the garden. Most of us love a beautiful yard when the summer hits. After all, you’ve just spent all of winter cooped up in your home, and now you can’t wait to enjoy the warm weather, the beautiful summer flowers, the trees, the birds, the fresh air, and more. However, what you don’t love is seeing large brown patches in your yard, which can be a sign that you have grub worms.

Grub worms are truly nasty little things that are the immature form of scarab beetles. They eat grass roots and organic matter on their way to maturity, making nasty brown spots in your yard that are difficult to grow back. That’s because the grub worms eat the roots of the grasses, basically destroying them in the process.

The Grub

Although their name can be funny, these little pests have nothing funny about the damage they leave behind. They lie dormant in the winter as eggs and then they hatch in the spring when they begin feeding on your roots and plants. They do this until they turn into adults, and then they will continue to infest your yard as they reproduce.

To check your lawn for grubs, you simply pull up the damaged grass portion of your yard. They don’t burrow too deep, and they don’t stand out because they are white. These nasty pests are great fodder for some other critters that can be nuisances, such as raccoons, skunks, and birds. If you notice torn up patches in your yard when you wake up in the morning, odds are, critters have been digging up grubs. While this is great that other critters are helping you get rid of grubs, they have to tear up your yard even more in order to do so — something that is not so great.

A small number of grubs is usually not a problem. They won’t do too much damage to notice it. However, if your brown spots are becoming unsightly and you can find no other reason for them but the presence of grubs, then it’s best to invest in a grub control solution for your OKC or Edmond home.
